That’s Not A Hat! Card Game

"If you’ve been looking for a new memory-based party game to cause absolute chaos with your friends and loved ones, then look no further than That’s Not a Hat from Ravensburger. In each round, players start with a gift face up in front of them. The starting player draws a card from the deck and turns their current gift face down. You can’t have more than one gift, after all. They then pass their facedown gift to the player to their left or right, depending on the arrow on the back of the card, declaring what the gift is. That player then turns their card facedown and passes it on to the next player.

Sounds straightforward, right? Wrong. Because if you don’t believe what you’ve been told the gift you’re receiving is, you can challenge your opponent. If they’re wrong, they get a penalty point and a new round begins. If you’re wrong and they did give you what they said, say a bird, you get the penalty.

Play continues until one player has three penalty points and the player with the fewest penalties is the winner.

For an incredibly small game with a simple premise, it has brough huge critical acclaim, with That’s Not a Hat being nominated for the Spiel Des Jahres award for 2023. Do you think you can remember five different things? I bet you can’t!
